What is eosinophilic esophagitis?

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic inflammatory condition, which leads to increased allergy cells, called eosinophils, in the esophagus. Common symptoms can include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and food getting stuck in the throat in adults and regurgitation, vomiting, and stomach pain in children.

Eosinophilic esophagitis is diagnosed by a gastrointestinal (GI) specialist. Many patients with eosinophilic esophagitis have allergic food triggers. Your allergist may evaluate for possible food triggers by performing skin prick testing and ordering serum IgE testing .
