Oral Food Challenge

An oral food challenge is performed in an allergy clinic to rule out a food allergy , to determine if a baked form of a food can be tolerated (particularly with egg allergy or milk allergy), or to determine if a food allergy has been outgrown.

A typical oral food challenge takes 3-4 hours and occurs in multiple steps. The first step is a small amount of food on the lip or in the mouth. Every 15-20 minutes the amount of food is increased as long as the previous step does not cause an allergic reaction. After multiple steps, a full serving of the food is eaten and you will be monitored for one hour. If an allergic reaction occurs at any step, the oral food challenge will be stopped and treatment will be given. If an allergic reaction does not occur, your allergist will give you recommendations on continuing the food in your diet.
